Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.0/4.2/4.3/4.4 (Virtualization Software). This affects the function HVMOP_track_dirty_vram. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in HVMOP_track_dirty_vram in Xen 4.0.0 through 4.4.x does not ensure possession of the guarding lock for dirty video RAM tracking, which allows certain local guest domains to cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 09/23/2014 by Andrew Cooper with Citrix as XSA-104 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-7154 since 09/24/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80263 (GLSA-201412-42 : Xen: Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123470 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2015-3721)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
There is no mitigation available for this issue. (The security of a Xen system using stub domains is still better than with a qemu-dm running as an unrestricted dom0 process. Therefore users with these configurations should not switch to an unrestricted dom0 qemu-dm.)
