Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen on x86 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function do_mmu_update of the component MMU Virtualization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The weakness was released 11/18/2014 by Jan Beulich with Citrix as XSA-109 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8594 since 11/04/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
MMU update operations targeting page tables are intended to be used on PV guests only. The lack of a respective check made it possible for such operations to access certain function pointers which remain NULL when the target guest is using Hardware Assisted Paging (HAP).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81027 (Debian DSA-3140-1 : xen - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123470 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2015-3721)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Running only PV guests or HVM guests with shadow paging enabled will avoid this issue. In a radically disaggregated system, restricting HVM service domains to software images approved by the host administrator will avoid the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98767), Tenable (81027), SecurityFocus (BID 71149†), Secunia (SA62672†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031270†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-67683, VDB-68222, VDB-68255 and VDB-68298. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
