A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.10.9 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component SDP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Use-after-free vulnerability in the SDP dissector in Wireshark 1.10.x before 1.10.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet that leverages split memory ownership between the SDP and RTP dissectors.
The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2014 by Buildbot Builder as wnpa-sec-2014-12 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-6421 since 09/16/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77731 (Wireshark 1.10.x < 1.10.10 Multiple DoS Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350280 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-446).
Upgrading to version 1.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
