A vulnerability was found in Cisco ASA (Firewall Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component VPN Failover Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 10/08/2014 by Alec Stuart-Muirk as cisco-sa-20141008-asa as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3389 since 05/07/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78240 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43423 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco ASA Software (cisco-sa-20141008-asa)).
