Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component no-sslv3 Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
OpenSSL before 0.9.8zc, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0o, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1j does not properly enforce the no-ssl3 build option, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via an SSL 3.0 handshake, related to s23_clnt.c and s23_srvr.c.
The weakness was disclosed 10/15/2014 with Akamai Technologies as secadv_20141015.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3568 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78485 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2014-427)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185091 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03162) (POODLE)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zc, 1.0.0o or 1.0.1j eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97037), Tenable (78485), SecurityFocus (BID 70585†), Secunia (SA61130†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031053†). The entries VDB-67990, VDB-67991, VDB-68791 and VDB-68906 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
