Summary
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1i. It has been declared as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the component DTLS SRTP. Executing a manipulation can lead to input validation. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2014-3513. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1i (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component DTLS SRTP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Memory leak in d1_srtp.c in the DTLS SRTP extension in OpenSSL 1.0.1 before 1.0.1j allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted handshake message.
The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2012. The weakness was published 10/15/2014 with OpenSSL as secadv_20141015.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3513 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
A flaw in the DTLS SRTP extension parsing code allows an attacker, who sends a carefully crafted handshake message, to cause OpenSSL to fail to free up to 64k of memory causing a memory leak. This could be exploited in a Denial Of Service attack. This issue affects OpenSSL 1.0.1 server implementations for both SSL/TLS and DTLS regardless of whether SRTP is used or configured. Implementations of OpenSSL that have been compiled with OPENSSL_NO_SRTP defined are not affected.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 945 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78733 (openSUSE Security Update : openssl (openSUSE-SU-2014:1331-1) (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370216 (Apple Xcode v7.0 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-16-2)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1j eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17208.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97035), Tenable (78733), SecurityFocus (BID 70584†), Secunia (SA61207†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031052†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com. Similar entries are available at VDB-67716, VDB-67991, VDB-67992 and VDB-77753. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
