Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Node.js 0.8.0/0.8.1/0.8.2/0.8.3 (JavaScript Library). Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality.
The weakness was released 09/30/2014 by Ilya Kantor as send Directory Traversal as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at nodesecurity.io. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-6394 since 09/15/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:
When relying on the root option to restrict file access it may be possible for an application consumer to escape out of the restricted directory and access files in a similarly named directory. For example, static(_dirname + '/public') would allow access to _dirname + '/public-restricted'.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at nodesecurity.io. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77934 (Fedora 21 : nodejs-send-0.3.0-4.fc21 (2014-11289)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370216 (Apple Xcode v7.0 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-16-2)).
Upgrading to version 0.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
