Apple Xcode up to 6.4 IDE Xcode Server Filesystem path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Xcode up to 6.4 (Programming Tool Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component IDE Xcode Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability (Filesystem). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 09/16/2015 by Ilya Kantor as HT205217 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-6394 since 09/15/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86245 (Apple Xcode < 7.0 (Mac OS X) (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370216 (Apple Xcode v7.0 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-16-2)).

Upgrading to version 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86245), SecurityFocus (BID 70100†) and Secunia (SA62170†). See VDB-67716, VDB-67990, VDB-77753 and VDB-77754 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
