Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.3 LaunchServices access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.3 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component LaunchServices. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

LaunchServices in Apple OS X before 10.10 allows attackers to bypass intended sandbox restrictions via an application that specifies a crafted handler for the Content-Type field of an object.

The weakness was published 10/16/2014 by Meder Kydyraliev with Google Security Team as HT6535 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-4437 since 06/20/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

The LaunchServices interface for setting content type handlers allowed sandboxed applications to specify handlers for existing content types. A compromised application could use this to bypass sandbox restrictions.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78550 (Mac OS X < 10.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE) (Shellshock)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The issue was addressed by restricting sandboxed applications from specifying content type handlers.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97631), Tenable (78550), SecurityFocus (BID 70627†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031063†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46715†). Similar entries are available at VDB-10344, VDB-67593, VDB-67592 and VDB-67590. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
