Drupal up to 7.31 Database Abstraction API expandArguments sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Drupal. This affects the function expandArguments of the component Database Abstraction API. Performing a manipulation results in sql injection. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2014-3704. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. Moreover, an exploit is present. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Drupal (Content Management System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function expandArguments of the component Database Abstraction API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The expandArguments function in the database abstraction API in Drupal core 7.x before 7.32 does not properly construct prepared statements, which allows remote attackers to conduct SQL injection attacks via an array containing crafted keys.

The weakness was disclosed 10/15/2014 by Stefan Horst as SA-CORE-2014-005 - Drupal core - SQL injection as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at drupal.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3704 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue. The advisory points out:

A vulnerability in this API allows an attacker to send specially crafted requests resulting in arbitrary SQL execution. Depending on the content of the requests this can lead to privilege escalation, arbitrary PHP execution, or other attacks.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78518 (Debian DSA-3051-1 : drupal7 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13054 (Drupal Core Database Abstraction API SQL Injection Vulnerability (SA-CORE-2014-005)).

Upgrading to version 7.32 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at drupal.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16892.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (78518), SecurityFocus (BID 70595†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031073†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46600†).
