Details
A vulnerability was found in XMLSoft libxml2 2.9.1 (Document Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was presented 10/17/2014 with Netherlands Cyber Security Center as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3660 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79293 (Amazon Linux AMI : libxml2 (ALAS-2014-444)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168333 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libxml2 (openSUSE-SU-2015:2372-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org.
