Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.0 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component libxml2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was presented 08/11/2015 with Netherlands Cyber Security Center as HT205030 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3660 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77257 (AIX 6.1 TL 8 : libxml2 (IV62447)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168333 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libxml2 (openSUSE-SU-2015:2372-1)).
Upgrading to version 8.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
