Details
A vulnerability was found in Pidgin up to 2.10.9 (Messaging Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function in the library libpurple of the component User Interface. The manipulation as part of a Groupwise Message leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
nmevent.c in the Novell GroupWise protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.10 allows remote servers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted server message that triggers a large memory allocation.
The weakness was shared 10/22/2014 by Yves Younan and Richard Johnson with Cisco as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-3696 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
A malicious server or man-in-the-middle could trigger a crash in libpurple by specifying that a large amount of memory should be allocated in many places in the UI.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78659 (Debian DSA-3055-1 : pidgin - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
