A vulnerability was found in Pidgin up to 2.10.9 (Messaging Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function stringprep of the component XMPP Message Handler. The jabber_idn_validate function in jutil.c in the Jabber protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.10 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory via a crafted XMPP message.

The weakness was disclosed 10/22/2014 by Thijs Alkemade (Paul) as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at pidgin.im. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3698 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:

A malicious server and possibly even a malicious remote user could create a carefully crafted XMPP message that causes libpurple to send an XMPP message containing arbitrary memory.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78659 (Debian DSA-3055-1 : pidgin - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169915 (OpenSUSE Security Update for pidgin (openSUSE-SU-2017:0925-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Correctly determine the start and end position of buffers when performing stringprep.
