A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg up to 0.11.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality in the library libavcodec. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a input validation vulnerability. Libavcodec in FFmpeg before 0.11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted ASF file.
The weakness was released 10/16/2012 by Jeremy Brown (Inferno) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as MSVR12-017 as confirmed advisory (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5359 since 10/10/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MSVR/MSV is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
