The FTP client in IBM AIX 6.1 and 7.1, and VIOS 2.2.1.4-FP-25 SP-02, does not properly manage privileges in an RBAC environment, which allows attackers to bypass intended file-read restrictions by leveraging the setuid installation of the ftp executable file.
The issue has been introduced in 11/09/2007. The weakness was published 10/18/2012 as CVE-2012-4845 as confirmed advisory (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is shared at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4845 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1805 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71163 (AIX 6.1 TL 9 : bos.mp64 (U854672)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120859 (IBM AIX FTP File Restrictions Bypass Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aix.software.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
