Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in FFmpeg 2.3.3. The impacted element is the function avcodec_align_dimensions2. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2014-8542. No exploit exists. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.3.3 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function avcodec_align_dimensions2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

libavcodec/utils.c in FFmpeg before 2.4.2 omits a certain codec ID during enforcement of alignment, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted JV data.

The issue has been introduced in 08/17/2014. The weakness was disclosed 10/30/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as avcodec/utils: Add case for jv to avcodec_align_dimensions2() as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8542 since 10/30/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81910 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : libav vulnerabilities (USN-2534-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176657 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1654-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99075), Tenable (81910), SecurityFocus (BID 70876†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52203†). The entries VDB-68318, VDB-99850, VDB-99852 and VDB-102005 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
