A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU cpio 2.11. Affected by this vulnerability is the function process_copy_in. Heap-based buffer overflow in the process_copy_in function in GNU Cpio 2.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a large block value in a cpio archive.
The weakness was disclosed 12/04/2014 by Michal Zalewski as Bug 1167571 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-9112 since 11/26/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80364 (Fedora 20 : cpio-2.11-28.fc20 (2014-16250)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
