chrony up to 1.31.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in chrony up to 1.31.0. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in chrony before 1.31.1 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (chronyd crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code by configuring the (1) NTP or (2) cmdmon access with a subnet size that is indivisible by four and an address with a nonzero bit in the subnet remainder.

The weakness was shared 04/16/2015 by Miroslav Lichvar (Website). The advisory is shared at listengine.tuxfamily.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1821 since 02/17/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82716 (Debian DLA-193-1 : chrony security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350163 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for chrony: ALAS-2015-539).

Upgrading to version 1.31.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82716), SecurityFocus (BID 73948†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49961†). The entries VDB-68347, VDB-72083, VDB-74129 and VDB-74990 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
