Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in USAA Mobile Banking 7.10.0/7.10.2 on Android (Banking Software). Affected is an unknown code of the component Screen Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The USAA Mobile Banking application before 7.10.1 for Android displays the most recently-used screen before prompting the user for login, which might allow physically proximate users to obtain banking account numbers and balances.

The weakness was presented 01/22/2015 by David Longenecker as USAA mobile app gives away personal data; fix released as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1314 since 01/22/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:

By design, the USAA Mobile app for Android allows users to select whether to log out immediately upon task-switching (i.e. being interrupted by a phone call or notification), or to stay logged in for up to 20 minutes. When "Stay logged in" is enabled however, versions prior to 7.10.1 display the last-viewed screen *before* prompting the user to log back in. If that last screen contained sensitive information, such as account numbers and balances, it becomes possible for one to obtain this information without authorization. Whether it were 20 minutes later, or a week later, launching the USAA mobile app would show personal information briefly before blanking the screen and prompting for a password or PIN.

A public exploit has been developed by David Longenecker and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at dnlongen.blogspot.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 7.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

With the 7.10.1 version, instead of seeing a screen full of personal information, the app opens to a benign menu that has no personal information. Upon choosing a menu option that would show private data, the user is prompted to log in before any data is shown. (...) Unfortunately, version 7.12.2 of the Android app appears to have re-introduced this flaw. I have again reported it to USAA and hope for a quick fix.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 74202†). Further details are available at packetstormsecurity.com. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
