A vulnerability was found in VMware vCenter Server 5.0/5.1/5.5 (Server Management Software) and classified as critical. The public release was coordinated with VMware. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8371 since 10/21/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
vCenter Server does not properly validate the presented certificate when establishing a connection to a CIM Server residing on an ESXi host. This may allow for a Man-in-the-middle attack against the CIM service.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79865 (VMware Security Updates for vCenter Server (VMSA-2014-0012)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216076 (VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 3 Missing (KB2086278)).
Applying the patch 5.0 Update 3c/5.1 Update 3/5.5 Update 2 is able to eliminate this problem.
