Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.19 (Software Library). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function iconv of the component IBM930 Data Converter. The manipulation with the input value 0xFFFF leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was disclosed 08/29/2014 by Adhemerval Zanella Netto (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-6656 since 09/01/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81029 (Debian DSA-3142-1 : eglibc - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 2.20 eliminates this vulnerability.
