Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel on 64-bit (Operating System) (unknown version). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component ASLR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The weakness was presented 12/04/2014 by Hector Marco as Offset2lib: bypassing full ASLR on 64bit Linux as confirmed article (Website). The advisory is shared at cybersecurity.upv.es. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Hector Marco and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at cybersecurity.upv.es. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cybersecurity.upv.es. The article contains the following remark:
Among many other security improvements, the PaX (from GRSecurity) patch places the executable at random positions with respect to the other shared objects. (...) To successfully bypass the ASLR by exploiting the stack buffer overflow presented in the PoC, the attacker needs to bypass first the stack smashing protector (SSP). If the SSP protection can not be bypassed, then the PoC would fail.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99159), Exploit-DB (35472) and SecurityFocus (BID 71494†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
