Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 16.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function window.location. The manipulation of the argument valueOf with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox before 16.0.2, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.10, Thunderbird before 16.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.13.2 do not prevent use of the valueOf method to shadow the location object (aka window.location), which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via vectors involving a plugin.
The weakness was disclosed 10/26/2012 by Mariusz Mlynski as MFSA2012-90 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4194 since 08/08/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68647 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : firefox (ELSA-2012-1407)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120660 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1407)).
