Mozilla Firefox before 16.0.2, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.10, Thunderbird before 16.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.13.2 allow remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and read the Location object via a prototype property-injection attack that defeats certain protection mechanisms for this object.
The weakness was presented 10/26/2012 by Antoine Delignat-Lavaud (moz_bug_r_a4) with PROSECCO Research Team as 2012-90 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4196 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62720 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1407)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120660 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1407)).
Upgrading to version 16.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
