A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.09 (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component MoveFileEx Call Hook Feature. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The weakness was shared 12/09/2014 by James Forshaw with Google Project Zero as APSB14-28 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9150 since 11/29/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77711 (Adobe Acrobat < 10.1.12 / 11.0.09 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB14-20)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123021 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB14-28)).
Upgrading to version 10.1.13 or 11.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17214.
