CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in X.org X11 1.0 (Windowing System Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ProcPutImage/GetHosts/RegionSizeof/REQUEST_FIXED_SIZE. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The issue has been introduced in 09/15/1987. The weakness was published 12/09/2014 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive as Advisory-2014-12-09 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at x.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8092 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/29/2025). This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception. The advisory points out:

These calls do not check that their calculations for how much memory is needed to handle the client's request have not overflowed, so can result in out of bounds reads or writes. These calls all occur only after a client has successfully authenticated itself.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9947 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84396 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : xorg-x11-server (SUSE-SU-2015:1127-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350232 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for xorg-x11-server: ALAS-2015-470).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99218), Tenable (84396), SecurityFocus (BID 71595†), Secunia (SA62292†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031326†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. Similar entries are available at VDB-68379, VDB-73184, VDB-73183 and VDB-73182. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
