A vulnerability has been found in XFree86 and X11 (Windowing System Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function SProcXFixesSelectSelectionInput. The SProcXFixesSelectSelectionInput function in the XFixes extension in X.Org X Window System (aka X11 or X) X11R6.8.0 and X.Org Server (aka xserver and xorg-server) before 1.16.3 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read or write) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted length value.
The weakness was presented 12/10/2014 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8102 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80557 (Amazon Linux AMI : xorg-x11-server (ALAS-2015-470)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
