FreeBSD 10.1 stdio _sflush memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in FreeBSD 10.1. This issue affects the function _sflush in the library stdio. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2014-8611. There is no available exploit. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD 10.1 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function _sflush in the library stdio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was presented 12/10/2014 by Adrian Chadd and Alfred Perlstein with Norse Corporation as FreeBSD-SA-14:27.stdio as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8611 since 11/04/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A programming error in the standard I/O library's __sflush() function could erroneously adjust the buffered stream's internal state even when no write actually occurred in the case when write(2) system call returns an error.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86270 (Mac OS X < 10.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (GHOST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99592), Tenable (86270), SecurityFocus (BID 71621†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031343†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52778†). See VDB-9015, VDB-74127, VDB-77828 and VDB-77762 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
