OpenSSL up to 1.0.1j DTLS dtls1_buffer_record memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in OpenSSL. The impacted element is the function dtls1_buffer_record of the component DTLS Handler. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2015-0206. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dtls1_buffer_record of the component DTLS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The issue has been introduced in 06/01/2010. The weakness was published 01/08/2015 by Chris Mueller as secadv_20150108.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The advisory contains:

This issue was reported to OpenSSL on 7th January 2015 by Chris Mueller who also provided an initial patch. Further analysis was performed by Matt Caswell of the OpenSSL development team, who also developed the final patch.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-0206 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:
A memory leak can occur in the dtls1_buffer_record function under certain conditions. In particular this could occur if an attacker sent repeated DTLS records with the same sequence number but for the next epoch. The memory leak could be exploited by an attacker in a Denial of Service attack through memory exhaustion.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1682 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80925 (FreeBSD : LibreSSL -- DTLS vulnerability (f9c388c5-a256-11e4-992a-7b2a515a1247)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350233 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: ALAS-2015-469).

Upgrading to version 1.0.0p or 1.0.1k eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13873.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99704), Tenable (80925), SecurityFocus (BID 71940†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031513†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56881†). Similar entries are available at VDB-68514, VDB-68516, VDB-68517 and VDB-68518. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
