Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenSSL 1.0.1j (Network Encryption Software). This affects the function ssl23_get_client_hello of the file s23_srvr.c of the component SSLv3 Handler. The manipulation as part of a ClientHello leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 10/15/2014. The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2015 by Frank Schmirler as secadv_20150108.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3569 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 70 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83526 (Apache Tomcat 7.0.x < 7.0.60 Multiple Vulnerabilities (FREAK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185099 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03244)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zd, 1.0.0p or 1.0.1k eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Kurt Roeckx.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99706), Tenable (83526), SecurityFocus (BID 71934†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031513†). The entries VDB-68514, VDB-68515, VDB-68516 and VDB-68518 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
