A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PHP (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects the function process_nested_data. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 12/29/2014 by Stefan Esser as Bug 68594 as confirmed bug report (Bug Tracker). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8142 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 2 years after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84345 (CentOS 7 : php (CESA-2015:1135)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185106 (HP-UX Apache Web Server Suite Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX03337)).
Upgrading to version 5.5.20 or 5.6.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19329.
