A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PHP (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects the function process_nested_data. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 12/29/2014 by Stefan Esser as Bug 68594 as confirmed bug report (Bug Tracker). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8142 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 2 years after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84345 (CentOS 7 : php (CESA-2015:1135)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.5.20 or 5.6.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19329.
