The DiskFileItem class in Apache Commons FileUpload, as used in Red Hat JBoss BRMS 5.3.1; JBoss Portal 4.3 CP07, 5.2.2, and 6.0.0; and Red Hat JBoss Web Server 1.0.2 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via a NULL byte in a file name in a serialized instance.
The weakness was disclosed 01/20/2015 by Arun Babu Neelicattu as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2015 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2186 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70872 (SuSE 11.2 / 11.3 Security Update : jakarta-commons-fileupload (SAT Patch Numbers 8445 / 8446)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87270 (Oracle WebLogic Server Multiple Unspecified Vulnerabilities (CPUJAN2015)).
