Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle HTTP Server 10.1.3.5.0/11.1.1.7.0/12.1.2.0/12.1.3.0 (Web Server). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function lua_ap_scoreboard_worker of the file modules/generators/mod_status.c of the component Web Listener. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Race condition in the mod_status module in the Apache HTTP Server before 2.4.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow), or possibly obtain sensitive credential information or execute arbitrary code, via a crafted request that triggers improper scoreboard handling within the status_handler function in modules/generators/mod_status.c and the lua_ap_scoreboard_worker function in modules/lua/lua_request.c.
The weakness was presented 01/20/2015 by Marek Kroemeke as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2015 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0226 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78331 (Amazon Linux AMI : httpd (ALAS-2014-388)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185106 (HP-UX Apache Web Server Suite Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX03337)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
