IBM WebSphere DataPower 2.1.x/8.5.x Secret Token Transmission cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM WebSphere DataPower 2.1.x/8.5.x (Application Server Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Secret Token Transmission Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The IBM WebSphere DataPower XC10 Appliance 2.0.0.0 through 2.0.0.3 and 2.1.0.0 through 2.1.0.2, when a collective configuration is enabled, has a single secret key that is shared across different customers installations, which allows remote attackers to spoof a container server by (1) sniffing the network to locate a cleartext transmission of this key or (2) leveraging knowledge of this key from another installation.

The bug was discovered 10/26/2012. The weakness was presented 10/26/2012 as PM68296 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at www-01.ibm.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5756 since 11/02/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79921), SecurityFocus (BID 56617†), OSVDB (87043†), Secunia (SA51161†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027798†).
