Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in IBM WebSphere DataPower 2.1.x/8.5.x (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Server-to-Server Communication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The IBM WebSphere DataPower XC10 Appliance 2.0.0.0 through 2.0.0.3 and 2.1.0.0 through 2.1.0.2, when a collective configuration is enabled, has a single secret key that is shared across different customers installations, which allows remote attackers to spoof a container server by (1) sniffing the network to locate a cleartext transmission of this key or (2) leveraging knowledge of this key from another installation.
The weakness was shared 10/26/2012 as PM68296 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5756 since 11/02/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The code was fixed to make the secret configurable and encrypted for network transmission.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79921), SecurityFocus (BID 56617†), OSVDB (87044†), Secunia (SA51161†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027798†). The entries VDB-6878, VDB-7010 and VDB-7011 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
