Samba 4.x Active Directory Domain Controller access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Samba 4.x. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Active Directory Domain Controller. This manipulation causes access control. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8143. There is not any exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Samba 4.x (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Active Directory Domain Controller. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity.

The weakness was released 01/23/2015 by Andrew Bartlett with Samba as CVE-2014-8143.html as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at samba.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The advisory contains:

As this was found during an internal audit of the Samba code there are no currently known exploits for this problem (as of January 15th 2015).
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8143 since 10/10/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Samba's AD DC allows the administrator to delegate creation of user or computer accounts to specific users or groups. However, all released versions of Samba's AD DC did not implement the additional required check on the UF_SERVER_TRUST_ACCOUNT bit in the userAccountControl attributes.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80944 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 14.10 : samba vulnerability (USN-2481-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168811 (OpenSuSE Security Update for samba (openSUSE-SU-2016:1064-1)). The advisory illustrates:

Most Samba deployments are not of the AD Domain Controller, but are of the classic domain controller, the file server or print server. Only the AD DC is affected by this issue. Additionally, most sites running the AD Domain Controller do not configure delegation for the creation of user or computer accounts, and so are not vulnerable to this issue, as no writes are permitted to the userAccountControl attribute, no matter what the value.

Upgrading to version 4.0.24, 4.1.16 or 4.2rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at samba.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Do not delegate permission to create users or computers beyond the default of Domain Administrators.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100596), Tenable (80944), SecurityFocus (BID 72278†), Secunia (SA62594†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031615†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-69204, VDB-79858, VDB-79859 and VDB-79860.
