A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.3/6.1/7.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component lquerylv. lquerylv in cmdlvm in IBM AIX 5.3, 6.1, and 7.1 and VIOS 2.2.x allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted DBGCMD_LQUERYLV environment-variable value.

The issue has been introduced in 08/13/2004. The weakness was disclosed 01/13/2015 as lvm_advisory.asc as confirmed advisory (Website) via Securiteam. The advisory is available at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8904 since 11/14/2014. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by S2 Crew and been published 11 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
