A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.3/6.1/7.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component lquerylv. The manipulation of the argument DBGCMD_LQUERYLV with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. lquerylv in cmdlvm in IBM AIX 5.3, 6.1, and 7.1 and VIOS 2.2.x allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted DBGCMD_LQUERYLV environment-variable value.
The issue has been introduced in 08/13/2004. The weakness was disclosed 01/13/2015 as lvm_advisory.asc as confirmed advisory (Website) via Securiteam. The advisory is available at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8904 since 11/14/2014. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by S2 Crew and been published 11 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3805 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83879 (AIX 6.1 TL 9 : bos.rte.lvm (U865862)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
