A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X 10.8.5/10.9.5/10.10/10.10.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. LoginWindow in Apple OS X before 10.10.2 does not transition to the lock-screen state immediately upon being woken from sleep, which allows physically proximate attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading the screen.
The weakness was presented 01/27/2015 by Xavier Bertels with Mono as HT204244 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8827 since 11/14/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An issue existed in the rendering of the lock screen. This issue was address through improved screen rendering while locked.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81087 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123193 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.2 and Security Update 2015-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-01-27-4)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
