A command injection issue existed in the handling of HTTP redirects. This issue was addressed through improved validation of special characters.
A public exploit has been developed by dash and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79105 (openSUSE Security Update : tnftp (openSUSE-SU-2014:1383-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122970 (Fedora Security Update for tnftp (FEDORA-2014-1411)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17004.
