Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player 2.1.5 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component RTP Streaming Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 01/20/2015 by Fabian Yamaguchi as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9630 since 01/20/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81130 (Debian DSA-3150-1 : vlc - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175285 (Debian Security Update for vlc (DSA 3150-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
