Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.3 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Targa File Processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted Targa image.
The bug was discovered 11/07/2012. The weakness was released 11/07/2012 by Alexander Gavrun (Senator of Pirates) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as HT5581 as confirmed advisory (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3755 since 06/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Senator of Pirates and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62890 (QuickTime < 7.7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120058 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-11-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.apple.com.
