A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.3 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component PICT File Handler. Apple QuickTime before 7.7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted PICT file.
The bug was discovered 11/07/2012. The weakness was presented 11/07/2012 by Jeremy Brown (CHkr_D591) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as HT5581 as confirmed advisory (Apple Security Announce). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3757 since 06/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Upgrading to version 7.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at support.apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12744.
