Linux Kernel up to 3.6.8 X86_CR4_OSXSAVE denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.6.8 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block in the library X86_CR4_OSXSAVE. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.6.9, when running on hosts that use qemu userspace without XSAVE, allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel OOPS) by using the KVM_SET_SREGS ioctl to set the X86_CR4_OSXSAVE bit in the guest cr4 register, then calling the KVM_RUN ioctl.

The weakness was disclosed 11/06/2012 by Jon Howell as Bug 862900 as not defined advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4461 since 08/21/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78877 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Linux kernel vulnerability (SOL15797)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350580 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-166).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at article.gmane.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79821), Tenable (78877), SecurityFocus (BID 56414†), OSVDB (87098†) and Secunia (SA51160†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
