Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site, aka "CTreeNode Use After Free Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was shared 11/13/2012 by Cheng-da Tsai, Sung-ting Tsai and Ming-Chieh Pan with Trend Micro as MS12-071 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4775 since 09/06/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 973 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100124 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-071)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch KB2761451 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
