Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site, aka "CFormElement Use After Free Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was published 11/13/2012 by Jose Antonio Vazquez Gonzalez with iDEFENSE Labs as MS12-071 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1538 since 03/08/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 973 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Applying the patch KB2761451 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12643.
