A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows up to XP (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Briefcase Handler. Integer underflow in Windows Shell in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted briefcase, aka "Windows Briefcase Integer Underflow Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 11/13/2012 by Tal Zeltzer with iDEFENSE Labs as MS12-072 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1527 since 03/08/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62904 (MS12-072: Vulnerabilities in Windows Shell Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2727528)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90844 (Microsoft Windows Shell Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-072)).
Applying the patch KB2727528 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12640.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79675), Tenable (62904), SecurityFocus (BID 56424†), OSVDB (87260†) and Secunia (SA51221†).
