Jetty httpd up to 9.2.8 HttpParser Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Jetty httpd up to 9.2.8 (Web Server). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component HttpParser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The exception handling code in Eclipse Jetty before 9.2.9.v20150224 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory via illegal characters in an HTTP header, aka JetLeak.

The weakness was published 02/24/2015 by DiGiT as HttpParser Error Buffer Bleed Vulnerability as confirmed advisory (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-2080 since 02/24/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

Jetty versions 9.2.3.v20140905 through 9.2.8.v20150217 have a ByteBuffer reuse and information bleed vulnerability surrounding bad HTTP request header parsing error responses.

A public exploit has been developed by LiquidWorm in Bash and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81576 (Jetty HttpParser Error Remote Memory Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123447 (Fedora Security Update for jetty (FEDORA-2015-2673)). The code used by the exploit is:

nc localhost 8080 << BADCOOKIE
GET $RESOURCEPATH HTTP/1.1
Host: localhost
Coo${BAD}kie: ${BAD}
The advisory illustrates:
(...) the implementation incorrectly exposes this debug information back on the HTTP 400 response reason phrase, potentially exposing parts of server side buffers used from prior request processing on the same server.

Upgrading to version 9.2.9.v20150224 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.eclipse.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19668.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39455), Tenable (81576), SecurityFocus (BID 72768†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031800†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49152†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
