The Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) functionality in Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, and 4.5 does not validate configuration data that is returned during acquisition of proxy settings, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code by providing crafted data during execution of (1) an XAML browser application (aka XBAP) or (2) a .NET Framework application, aka "Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 11/13/2012 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS12-074 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4776 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62906 (MS12-074: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2745030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90841 (Microsoft .NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-074)).

Applying the patch KB2745030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12792.
