The code-optimization feature in the reflection implementation in Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and 4.5 does not properly enforce object permissions, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted XAML browser application (aka XBAP) or (2) a crafted .NET Framework application, aka "WPF Reflection Optimization Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 11/13/2012 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS12-074 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4777 since 09/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62906 (MS12-074: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2745030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
